Interview with Nico - spoken word

Er, and what, what are your memories of the Velvets, is there, you know, do they count for you, do you regret any of it ?

I don't regret, no, I don't regret a minute of it.

Yeah, er, and the Velvets seem to get quite a new sort of popularity with young people, do you think that's good or bad or ...

I think that's very good and it proves that we were twenty years ahead.

Yeah, right. Er, when you said, you sang, you missed some material from Chelsea Girl, one of your earlier LPs, is there any reason for that, or have you just get bored with the music and doing them ? Is that why ?

Er, no, because they're mainly other people's songs.

Yeah, OK.

And I want to, to sing my songs.

Yeah. Er, do you find work, solo work, er, you did not get involved with the boys yet, do you find that more satisfying to work with a band or not, you know ?

Also because the lyrics are very variety, you know.

Yeah.

Variety and light entertainment, light entertainment, which I don't care for.

Yeah. Er, and what, what's your favourite LP that you've done do you find most satisfying when you go back to it, I mean, in particular ?

My famous... what ?

Your ... any, er, personal favourite LP or tracks that you've done.

Oh, on each album there's about, there's one side that I like better than the other. I can't really say that I prefer one album to the other.

Er, what do you think of, Cale's took his LP, then Maureen Tucker also broke out one LP, what's the value of that, do you know what I mean ? and Lou Reed's got a new one out too, do you take any notice of them all ?

No. I don't even know what's it's called.

Er, you seem to, actually the last tune got quite a good reception in the audience, 'cause there's been things that you couldn't get a bigger audience.

Is it what ?

You seem ... only tonight and last night you know you've had a sort of fairly big audience and they've been quite sort of enthusiastic. Did you find this lately I mean or, you know, I mean, the band in the wall concert, the numbers were loud. Is it just lately you've getting on a big crowd ?

That what ?

That you've been getting a fairly big audience, is that only lately that you've found it ?

No, they're not a big audience, it's a small audience!

Alright, puts me in my place, doesn't it! Er...

It happens to me to sing for 2000 people, which isn't a big audience, you know it could be a standard audience.

Er, why do you live in Manchester, you know, is there any reason for Manchester than anywhere else, and do you miss Germany, too ?

Well, where I live right now reminds me of Berlin. Manchester reminds me of Berlin in a way.

Er, do you think, do you, er, Andy Warhol do you think was responsible for setting up your career with some great musicians deep with the Exploding Plastic Inevitable, do you think he was, do you think he was responsible for setting up your, setting up your musical career ?

Oh yes.

Yeah. OK. What's your major influence in music ?

Well, he's mainly responsible that I started writing my songs, because I didn't want to be in movies any longer.

Er, what would you say your major musical influence is ?

Pure music you mean ?

Er, well, no, any influence at all.

it goes from classical to opera. Opera and er ... free jazz.

Yeah. Er, on Chelsea Girl you did I'll Keep it with Mine, you said that Dylan wrote it for you, I don't know if that's true. Did you ever do any other work with Dylan on it ?

No, he just sang me a few songs including that one.

Yeah.

Then he sent to me a demo. Just a demo [...]
